Realignments are often useful in the Americas and Africa, because DEFCON doesn't restrict them. Angola is a popular target (Zaire, Botswana, South Africa being adjacent). Venezuela is another popular target. When DEFCON is at 2, these countries can't be couped (of course, you would usually prefer a coup if it's higher than 2). If it's a non-BG, unless it is stability 1, coups are a less efficient use of Ops than simply placing IPs. If your opponent controls the country, placing IPs there is usually too expensive (they can retaliate with a card of 1 less Ops than you had to spend). And most importantly, realignments can remove your opponent's access to part of the board, which is when they are most often useful. Noticing these opportunities can take an experienced eye.↧
