I don't think the USSR opener is so simple as the OP described. While it can be compared to E4 in chess to coup iran, it isn't a given, and the outcome certainly isn't. Sometimes putting 2 inf into afghanistan is chosen instead (usually a result of bad hand or no 4 ops card for the coup) or there is an opening play in europe (while rare between veteran players - this can sometimes pay off).The primary reason for when choosing the coup (most times) is to lock US out of this juicy area before they can secure a presence that usually leads into a dogfight - not to the USSR benefit.
