Maybe it might be because i am a "nuhb" at this game (i just finished my 3rd solo game; the USSR finally won) but I find that the hammer really comes down hard on Russia at the end of the game. Yes, I realize that this is how it historically played out, but still it made me wonder about the balance of this game tilting to the US.

Basically what I find ridiculous (as you can see from the title) is Chernobyl... played in conjunction with certain cards it can pretty much destroy the USSR's position in Europe- which is, of course, the crown jewel of the world (atleast in this game, anyway). Here is a typical scenario that would occur in the unfortunate event that the US draws Chernobyl before the USSR does:

"Headline! Oh, look what we have here, CHERNOBYL. Oh, I will pick.... EUROPE, haha now you can't do anything because of Nato and a billion other treaties i massed there from Early game.. oh now I am Tearing Down Your wall! Let me pump influence into East Germany while you watch in despair! Uh-oh, here comes da Pope-ah! And here comes... yes it is! it's SUPER MARIO WALESA WITH SOLIDARITY NOW YOU ARE SCREWED FOR THE REST OF THE GAME! GG"

My third go at this game exposed me to USSR cards that can 'sortah' be foils to these kinds (like the Gorbachev cards)of onslaughts but overall this kind of thing seems to be a common occurence for me...

Yes, that sounds pretty disastrous, but just as other cards in the game, you need to prepare for this as well. So Russia could use the starting influence, Comecon and Warsaw Pact (and even other OPs) to secure at least East Germany and Poland to prevent that the US would even try to use Chernobyl on Europe. 7 Russian IP in both of these countries are no exception in my games. Believe me, that IS enough to keep the Americans away :-)

I played more than 500 games now and it very rarely happens that a case occurs like you described.

There is a similar problem with Voice of America. Secure your important BGs by putting 3 IP in them to prevent the ugly Democrats from kicking you out of (a part of) a region completely.

Remember: defending is the best attack! (or was it the other way around? ;-))
