You can't.
Some people will simply give the US player an extra VP.
As for me and my TS friend, we have a workaround for this issue. I posted few months ago.
It went this way :
"[...] consist of letting the US player draw up to 5 cards. Each time he draws a card, he elect to discard or keep it. The US player is only allowed to keep a single card. So the card picking ends whenever he decides to keep a given card or after he discarded the fifth one (in that case, the event would have been handled just as in a real game)."
