I played another game with a different fried last night over Vassal (Man, what a cool thing Vassal is!), and I gotta share what happened lol.It was my friend's first game, and as with everyone I've played with so farm she didn't take long to get the game. We were on turn 7, and I was the US, on 18 VPS, and Defcon was at 3. I got Summit. I controlled or dominated 3 regions, she 2. I asked her if she'd be pissed at losing the game then and there by a dice roll, and she proclaimed that yes, that would be a cheap win as far as she was concerned (but with good humor, she's an awesome gamer, I have to point out). I had a pretty good hand, and she'd already bemoaned her hand as being awful, so I figured I'd try to go for aa Africa score instead, as it was within my grasp (and the Summit result wasn't certain anyway).
So the turn goes on, and as one of my ARs I play a war card. I can't recall exactly which one it was right now, but that's not too important.
Here's my two mistakes that caused me to lose from 18 VPS up :D
I forgot that earlier she'd played Flower Power. So she gets 2 VPs, dropping me to 16, and I focus on that and panic. I next play Summit, figuring I can claw back the 2 lost VPs, completely forgetting about the Defcon which is now at 2. She wins the roll, I'm throwing up my hands at losing yet more VPs, and then she reads out "Hm, so I can change the Defcon if I want, too? I'll raise it then, we don't want to have a nuclear war, do we?"
So I'm /facepalming here at the realisation that not only am I probably going to lose, but that my loss is going to in part be due to me pointing out to her that if she lowers Defcon to 1 now, I lose, not her, since I'm phasing player. There's no question about me telling her, of course. I groaningly, resignedly explain, and she cackles, drops Defcon to 1 and that's the end for the Free World rofl.
Great game, this :D
