I nearly always play the US and got completely slammed early on. There's only so much you can do about the Defcon, but you can do something critical on your last play of the turn to put the USSR in a conundrum board position-wise. That may force them to have a hard decision on their first turn over whether to counter whatever you did or coup a battleground, thereby letting you improve your position still further. Early on, that, holding certain cards until after the first reshuffle, not wasting actions when a certain card isn't yet out (DeGaulle) and playing some of the USSR's starred cards for OPs early to get them out of the deck helped me to stop getting killed. I'm sure the better players in this forum could still steamroll me, but there's my 2 cents.

It's testament to how great the game is that I'm eager to have another go right after being destroyed...again :)
