Easy way to look at game and decide:
Is military force the only determining factor in winning a victory? Wargame. Red Winter is a perfect example of this.
Is military force involved but other factors such as politics, economics, religion, etc play a part in winning a victory? ConSim. 1989 also falls in this category as does Labyrinth, Andean Abyss, A Distant Plain, etc.
Commercial games of this nature have existed since the 60's but have never been as popular as they are now.
The other cousin is the war-themed board game...think Memoir '44.
It's really not difficult and it does help people to find the next game they want to play if they have at least some kind of road map. Easier to do a RIYL also.
