TS is not my favorite board game per se, but it is the game that I played the most. I would say that the main reason it is placed number 1 in BGG is that many people regard this game very highly (but personally most likely not the highest, like me).

I watched a documentary recently where they asked a group of people to guess the number of gummy bears in a jar. Out of 350 people no one got the number right, but their answers averaged came to be within few from the actual number.

Point that I'm trying to make here, is that the game is really good, but not necessarily the best in the world, as personal tastes vary a lot.

If you are a history fan, and like the theme, I have no doubt that you will like the game. But keep in mind, that this game is called struggle for a reason. It is very competitive game, and every time I play it (with more than 250+ plays) I feel emotionally drawn. It is tense, it is nail-biting.

If both you and your wife happen to like it, there is a chance that someone might sleep on the couch if they lose:D

In essence, this game is NOT for everyone, but those who have the interest to play it...really really like it. Now if a bunch of people who only liked Catan, Carcassone and Ticket to ride all decided to play this game, it would drop pretty hard in the rankings, b/c this game is not up their alley...but, those who have played it really really like it...like myself.
