Wow! Thank you all for responding. I expected no response and instead I refreshed the page to see numerous responses, thanks again to all!

I understand its a leap to go from Monopoly to TS but I'm willing to put in the work. I dont want to play solo for long but can't teach it to others until I learn how to do it myself first.

I will definitely try the forums on the other site but I think the suggestion of finding someone in my area to teach it would be best. The question is, how? Craigslist? Anyone on this thread live in NYC??

I am glad you ar interested in learning such a great game. Though the mechanics are tougher than many euros, they are not as difficult to learn as many wargames. I think perhaps the issue is you are trying to learn why and how at the same time. Typically a rule book does not tell you why a mechanic operates as it does, nor why you should choose one action vs. another. Try playing through a solo game (or even better one of the fully detailed session reports here) and first focus on the mechanics (what is being done). After a few tries the whys will become clearer.

I am sure others on the site can advise you how to find opponents. If you are willing to drive a little, there is a game club that meets in Bucks County, PA - Eastern Pennsylvania Gaming Society (EPGS).

If you have friends who would be willing to play the game, maybe you can muddle through the rules together. One of the enjoyable things about TS is learning how to play better. This is not a game where all of the strategies will become apparent on day one.
